Dog name: Coco Nicknames: Not provided
History: Coco was rescued from the street in very poor condition by Galgos en Familia, Málaga. One of her front legs was badly injured. She was initially taken in by La Guarida, an overwhelmed shelter in a village in Córdoba, who asked Galgos en Familia for help because they did not have the capacity to provide all the care she needed. As soon as they were able, Coco was brought into their care, seen by a vet and started on treatment. She was very sad when she first arrived, but has improved greatly and is now showing her lovely personality more and more each day.
Uk arrival date: 17/10/2026
Breed: Galga
Colour: White
DOB: 10/04/2024
Height: TBC
Weight: 19 kg
Neutered: No due to health condition
Mediterranean disease: PCR negative for Babesia, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Hepatozoon canis, Mycoplasma haemocanis, Borrelia burgdorferi, Rickettsia and Leishmaniasis
Health condition: Coco has several ongoing medical needs. She has a likely permanent limp affecting her left front leg following a previously infected elbow wound, which can occasionally reopen. She also has reduced vision in both eyes, particularly the right, and balance/neurological signs. A neurology assessment gave a presumptive diagnosis of chronic multifocal encephalopathy, considered most likely congenital/developmental or due to scarring from a previous problem. Cardiology investigations identified systolic dysfunction with a dilated phenotype and mild mitral regurgitation. She was started on Pimobendan every 12 hours, with a follow-up echocardiogram recommended. She also has a shortened lower jaw and tongue and benefits from raised food and water bowls.
Character: Very friendly and affectionate. Coco has blossomed since rescue and continues to improve. She is good with other dogs and adults, and is currently living successfully in foster with cats.
Likes: Affection, company and greeting other dogs. Running in the enclosed dog park with her foster sibling!
Dislikes: She may initially be nervous of narrow passages or doorways and can become unsettled if left alone in the dark.
Special talents: Despite everything she has been through, Coco is affectionate, sociable and adaptable, and a total triumph
Specific needs: A home able to accommodate her mobility, vision, neurological and cardiac needs. Care to be taken not to lift her front leg too high as this causes pain. Raised food and water bowls are needed. She may need patience with stairs and unfamiliar spaces while she adjusts. Ongoing veterinary follow-up and prescribed medication will be required.
Cat workable: Yes – excellent with cats and currently living with them in foster
How long they can be left for: Her foster reports that she is generally fine home alone for a few hours; she may whine or bark if left alone in the dark.
Current area: Malaga, Spain
