Dog name: Magenta Nickname: Maggie
History: Magenta was handed into Galgos del Sur in Córdoba by her Galguero.
UK arrival date: 2 August 2026
Breed: Galga
Colour: Black with frosting
Date of birth: 1 September 2019
Height: 65 cm
Weight: 25.8kg (on diet)
Neutered: Yes
Mediterranean diseases: Negative
Health condition: Maggie has been diagnosed with arthritis in her back knees and is currently receiving anti-inflammatory medication, Gabapentin and Pardale for pain relief. Maggie is also currently on a carefully managed diet, so treats need to be given in moderation.
Character: Magenta is a loving, affectionate and delightful girl. Although she has grown considerably in confidence, she remains timid, easily startled and most comfortable in a calm, predictable environment. She forms a very deep bond with her person and loves being close to them. Her perfect day includes a gentle morning walk, meals, plenty of naps and an evening cuddle on the sofa. If her person disappears into another room, she will often pop her head around the door to make sure they are still there. She can become overwhelmed in busy situations and is particularly nervous around men. She can build trust with a patient man over time, but women are currently her safe space and she prefers to be handled by them. She is gentle on the lead and prefers a slow pace, although she may pull if she sees a cat or squirrel. She can cry or lunge when unfamiliar dogs come too close, so she needs space and calm, supportive handling. She copes well with traffic and busy roads. Timid but calm around children.
Likes: Being close to her person, cuddling on the sofa or bed, gentle walks, treats, marrowbones, praise, comfortable sleeping places and a good bottom scratch. She also enjoys the company of calm, respectful sighthounds.
Dislikes: Busy or overwhelming environments, unfamiliar men, long walks, being physically moved from a comfortable bed or sofa, and unfamiliar non-sighthound dogs getting too close. She is particularly reactive towards bull breeds.
Special talents: Deploying her soulful eyes whenever treats are nearby. She performs adorable little “froggy hops” on the bed and will wiggle her bottom when requesting a scratch.
Specific needs: A quiet, patient home where life can move at a slower pace. Her adopter should be around much of the time and comfortable managing her arthritis, medication, diet and need for short, gentle walks. Maggie could live with a calm, polite and respectful dog, preferably another sighthound. She would not enjoy sharing her space with a bouncy or playful dog. Her previous bed guarding has improved enormously, but it could reappear while she adjusts to a new canine companion, so this would need thoughtful management. She could also be happy as an only dog if her person is home regularly.
Cat workable: No. Shows a strong interest in cats, actively tracks them and may try to crawl beneath parked cars to reach them. She also pulls towards cats and squirrels on walks.
How long can she be left?: Currently left for up to six hours on two days each week. She may cry for a while when her foster carer leaves, but she eventually settles and has shown no destructive behaviour.
Current area: Derby, UK
